Marennes

In the heart of the salt marshes, discover the town of Marennes, city that was long one of the most prosperous of the ancient region of Saintonge, mainly due to the salt trade, at the time when the "White Gold" was a highly sought after commodity.

 

Former sub-prefecture until 1926, the town of Marennes derives its current reputation of the oyster Marennes-Oléron, the most important and famous of Europe.

 

On site you will find many mansions and many historical monuments, including the church of St. Peter and his highest tower at 85 meters, the highest in Charente-Maritime.
