Built on a rock submerged at high tide, Fort Louvois, a maritime fortification from the 17th century, located between the island of Oléron and the Marennes.
It owes its name to Louvois, minister of war of Louis XIV, who ordered its construction between 1691 and 1694 after being designed by Vauban. Strategically located, it should help support a fed crossfire with the Citadel of Oléron to defend the Rochefort Arsenal.
